Podcast Stockton Signs Off

In Entertainment, News on September 30, 2011 at 4:33 pm

After 2+ years, locally based podcast Podcast Stockton has released their final podcast. Hosts Matt Beckwith and Rodrigo Villagomez sat behind the microphones in the Outback Studio, a room full of computers and Kiss memorabilia, for one last time to thank supporters and provide a bookend for what both described as an eye opening experience that strengthened their view of Stockton.

Both Beckwith and Villagomez cited time constraints for the end of the program. Beckwith had less and less time to produce the show, which he said can take anywhere from 8-10 hours for the hour long show, after he started commuting to the bay area for his job at a call center. Villagomez, who has been the in-game MC for the Stockton Ports for the past 2 season, also needed more time for his other jobs as a KWIN DJ and a broadcasting instructor at San Joaquin Delta College. “It was easy to do Podcast Stockton when I had nothing going on,” says Villagomez, who was unemployed when he joined the show, “but as of late I’ve barely had time to tie my shoes and creating content for Podcast Stockton has been a bit of a challenge.  Obviously you’ve got to put food on the table. … Sometimes labors of love have to be the victim of necessity and that’s kind of where we’re at.”

Podcast Stockton started in 2008 as an idea Beckwith had to blog and podcast local restaurant reviews. Shortly after he registered the URL Forbes named Stockton the most miserable city in America. After exchanging e-mails with his friend Thomas Mondragon, who was Podcast Stockton’s first guest, Beckwith shifted the focus of the site to accentuating the positive aspects of the city. For 70 episodes, Beckwith did just that. He picked up Villagomez as a co-host along the way and interviewed a wide-variety of local guests including the City Council members Susan Eggman and Diana Lowery, the Haggin Museum’s Todd Ruhstaller, Record Columnist Mike Fitzgerald, Wes Rhea of the Convention and Visitor’s Bureau (who also began contributing segments to the show) and many others (which, full disclosure, also includes me). Regardless of who was interviewed, Beckwith’s positivity towards Stockton remained the central theme. “If it weren’t for Podcast Stockton, I probably could guarantee that I wouldn’t have as positive an outlook on this city as I do now,” Villagomez remarks during the final broadcast.

Breaking from their typical format, Beckwith and Villagomez didn’t interview a guest. Instead the spent the hour-long show reminiscing and thanking the various people who helped them along the way “Podcast Stockton taught me,” says Beckwith, “just try, just ask people. You’ll be amazed at the generosity of strangers.” That seemed to be the biggest takeaway from the experience for both hosts, interacting with the people of Stockton. “There are people that I know that I never would have known who they were had it not been for Podcast Stockton,” Beckwith opines. “The gravity of that,” he continues, “that I would have crossed paths with people if it wasn’t for Podcast Stockton. That is so immense to me, that I could have gone on my whole life and not known so many wonderful people.”

While this may be the end for Podcast Stockton, Beckwith intends to keep the site up so people can go back and listen to the show. He also leaves open the possibility of occasionally blogging for the site, but not with the regularity that the site enjoyed in its early days.

Preview UFC 135: Nate Diaz vs Takanori Gomi

In Sports on September 23, 2011 at 8:00 am

Nate Diaz Triangle

This weekend Stockton’s Nate Diaz will take on Takanori Gomi in the undercard of this weekend’s UFC 135 PPV (which is main evented by a Lightheavyweight Championship fight between Jon “Bones” Jones (c) and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson). With Nick Diaz and his shenanigans making headlines lately this fight has gone overlooked so I’ll give it a quick preview here.

Diaz has had somewhat of a rocky couple years losing 5 of his previous 8 fights, most recently losing his last 2 fights by 3 round unanimous decisions to Rory MacDonald and Dong Hyun Kim. It is important to note that all of those losses (and all but one loss over the course of Diaz’s professional career) came via the judges scorecard. Nate may not be enjoying the success his brother has recently, he definitely does share his endurance. Like his brother, Nate is a skilled practitioner of Cesar Gracie’s brand of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, which he’s put to use to win 9 of his career fights via submission. That should come in handy against Gomi who previously lost to the elder Diaz via submission (gogoplata) while fighting for the now defunct Pride Fighting Championship organization (a loss that was eventually wiped from record after Nick tested positive for marijuana in a post-fight drug test).

Gomi himself hasn’t had much luck in the cage since joining the UFC in 2010. He’s lost 2 of his 3 fights in the octagon, both submission losses to Clay Guida and Kenny Florian. Gomi is more of a wrestler and striker, winning a majority of his fights by either decision of knockout. Gomi holds an experience edge over Diaz, his first professional fight was in 1998, when his opponent was still in middle school.

Come Saturday, Nate Diaz will more than likely be back on the winning track. His endurance and technical skill will outmatch Gomi in what should be an entertaining bout and I predict a win via submission in the 2nd or 3rd round. After the loss Gomi will probably be cut by UFC President Dana White and Diaz will continue on his quest to reclimb the ladder of the lightweight division.

Nothing to do: Sept. 22nd-Sept. 25th

In Entertainment on September 21, 2011 at 1:30 pm

Another week, another list of all that nothingness Stockton apparently has going on. Wednesdays will be this feature’s regular spot so we can include Thursdays and give you time to plan out your Fridays. Yes, I’m still looking for a better name for these posts. Your suggestions are welcome.

Also, big thanks to Wes Rhea of the Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. His events calendar over at VisitStockton.org is indispensable in helping find out what’s going on in Stockton throughout the week. By the way, the CVB’s Restaurant Week is still going on and runs through Sunday.

Thursday Sept. 22nd

Funky Thursdays at Java Aroma (feat. Ship of Foolz) 8pm – 10pm Free

Notorious hipster hangout Java Aroma hosts Funky Thursdays from 8-10 with Stockton funk fusion band Ship of Foolz. I can’t personally vouch for the quality of said funk since I haven’t seen Ship of Foolz before, but I assume they’re pretty funky. If you’re looking for something inexpensive to do while perhaps sipping some coffee, you could do much worse than Funky Thursdays.

Stockton Symphony “Classics I: Rhythms From the Americas” (feat. Martina Filjak on piano) at SJDC Atherton Auditorium 8pm (Also Sat. at 6pm) $10-$55

The Stockton Symphony kicks off its season on Thursday and Saturday with their Rhythms From the Americas concert which will feature performances of classic pieces such as Gershwin’s Cuban Overture, Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major, plus Orchestral Variations and El Salón México by Aaron Copland (no relation to the Stallone/DeNiro Cop Land).

As usual with these performances the Symphony has brought in a guest in the form of pianist Martina Filjak of Croatia whom the Plain Dealer has described as “An adventurous musician with exceptional command of keyboard possibilities.”

Friday Sept. 23rd

The Antechamber, Double Block and Bleed, The Caps, and Seeker at the Plea for Peace Center 7pm $5

If you want to check out some local indie bands the Plea for Peace Center has another slate of shows this weekend. On Friday the shows theme is apparently ex-members of the band Scattered Fall which was a pretty good band back in their day. Plea for Peace was kind enough to provide a YouTube link to one of Double Block and Bleed’s previous performances if you’d like to see if their style of music works for you (if you can forgive the sound quality of course).

Jim Messina at the Bob Hope Theatre 7:30pm $25

I’ll be honest, I have no idea who Jim Messina is, but apparently he was an original member of country rock band Poco and once formed a soft rock band with Kenny Loggins back in the 70s. More recently, according to his Wikipedia page, he released a Latin-based album in 2009 that featured him exclusively on the Flamenco guitar. Needless to say, the guy’s got range. Plus, he was the last bass player for Buffalo Springfield, so that has to count for something. If any of that sounds appealing, then head on over to the Bob Hope Theatre on Friday and soft rock out.

Saturday Sept. 24th

The American Bully Competition at Stockton 99 Speedway 10am $10 (kids free)

You have 3 guesses as to what the American Bully Competition is. Give up? According to their website it is the first in a series of dog shows centering around pit bulls (aka bullies). Yes, the Bully Competition is a family event and not a series of physical challenges like “locker stuff” and “swirlie hold”. In addition to the traditional dog show, there will be a bunch of automotive events like a drifting competition and a burnout contest (which does not, in fact, feature a bunch of stoners doing physical challenges like “Find the Zig-Zag” or “Thumb Wrestling for a Twinkie”). Throw in some live music and this event is fun for the whole family.

Family Day at the Park presented by The Record at University Park 9:30am – 3:30pm Free

If you’d like a family event with less of a Michael Vick vibe (or if you just have younger kids who are scared of dogs), then the Record is hosting their annual literacy fair this weekend at University Park with most of the stuff you’d expect at an event like this. There will be mascots, clowns, story telling, and the Friends of the Library used book sale.

Instauration Fest (feat. 8 local bands) at the Plea for Peace Center 4pm $10

The 9:00 News, Point of View, Hit Reset, Redlight Greenlight, Steeproof, Hella Down, Cheapshots, and Knucklebucket will be at the Plea for Peace Center Saturday afternoon for Instauration Fest, a celebration of local pop punk bands. In addition to a BBQ, the show marks Steeproof’s CD release show. While some of the bands at Friday’s show call San Francisco home, Instauration Fest features only 2 bands west of the Altamont with the rest of the bands hailing from Stockton, Lodi, or Tracy. The 209 area has always had an eclectic mix of talented local musicians and this event is a great way to support local artists.

Sunday Sept. 25th

The Legends of Def Comedy Jam 1 at the Bob Hope Theatre 8pm $43.50-$118.50

Joe Torrey, Tommy Chunn, Howie Bell, Tiffany Haddish, and B Phlat highlight this tour of the Def Comedy Jam all stars Sunday night. All of them have numerous accolades that are too voluminous to list but Joe Torrey, in addition to being Guy Torrey’s brother, was the guy who took over as host of Def Comedy Jam when Martin Lawrence left the show in 1992. A long while back I attended a Def Comedy Jam show in Stockton and they’re definitely entertaining, either via the act on the stage or through people watching in the crowd (I’d never seen a pimp suit in the wild until that night). Regardless, if you opt to attend this comedic showcase you definitely won’t be bored on a Sunday night.

Exploring Stockton: Stockton Joe’s

In Entertainment on September 21, 2011 at 7:00 am

We’re in the midst of Stockton Restaurant Week which, in its third year, is always a great opportunity to try new things for a relatively inexpensive price.

My personal kickoff to Restaurant Week was Sunday when my girlfriend and I decided to head to Stockton Joe’s in Lincoln Center. I had never been to the restaurant side of Stockton Joe’s, so I was excited to explore Stockton try out something new.

Joe’s has a pretty decent Restaurant Week menu (PDF warning) offering a $15 3-course meal with either that day’s special (Sun-Thurs only) or your choice of any pasta dish for the entree. For $20 you get your choice of any chicken dish for your entree plus a side and for $25 you get the steak and shrimp combo. We both opted for the $15 version of dinner, choosing Sunday’s special which was chicken cacciatore.

One thing I had heard about Joe’s was that the service there was mediocre to put it nicely. Before we even got served someone replied to my Foursquare check-in on Twitter to joke that they too had taken advantage of the restaurant’s special that day and received the best service they’d ever gotten there…from a take out order. While the service we had wasn’t as bad as their Google reviews seem to imply (one of their tags is “bad service”), it was decidedly mediocre. At one point we had to remind our server, with check in hand, that we still had a third course coming. Of course, this is just one night’s worth of service on what’s usually an off night for restaurants, so maybe it gets better. If we decide to go for their Thursday special of corn beef and cabbage, I’ll let you know how that goes.

Service really doesn’t matter though as long as the food is good, and Joe’s definitely brings it. We were served an ample serving of chicken cacciatore. Having never had the dish before, I was surprised that the chicken was served bone-in, which resulted in a few minutes of carefully deboning the chicken to minimize messiness. Had this been at home, I would have just grabbed a roll of paper towels and dug in, but Joe’s is a classy joint so deboning it was.

The entree itself was delicious. The sauce was excellently seasoned and the onions and bell peppers were grilled to perfection. The only real criticism I had was that the $15 deal did not come with a side. So unless we felt like filling up on more bread the main course was chicken cacciatore with a side of chicken cacciatore. It was a bit monotonous, but still delicious and very filling. So filling that we had to stop halfway through to save room for our chocolate sundae dessert. If you want a meal that will provide you with delicious leftovers for lunch the next day, Joe’s is definitely the place to go.

All things considered, I would absolutely recommend Stockton Joe’s. The menu looked particularly appealing and the prices were such that it would be an affordable destination even without the restaurant week deal.

Exploring Stockton is an ongoing series reviewing first time experiences at various Stockton venues.

The Danger Zone for the 9/16-9/18 weekend

In News on September 19, 2011 at 9:00 am

The Danger Zone is our crime blotter culled together from the nightly police reports. Yes, it’s called The Danger Zone because of Stockton’s consistent ranking in top ten of most dangerous cities in America. Feel free to listen to this while reading.

Friday 9/16 PM-Saturday 9/17 AM:

According to the report, a vehicle was traveling down McDougald at a high rate of speed when it lost control and struck a tree. That caused the vehicle to go airborne, hitting several parked cars in the reporting party’s driveway, eventually crashing through the garage where it finally came to rest after hitting the boat and truck within. A witness saw the male suspect, 25-year-old Zane Ashik Ali, exit the car and attempt to flee. Due to a head injury suffered in the accident he didn’t make it very far and he was detained by police shortly afterwards. He was admitted to the hospital due to his injuries. Also in the vehicle were two female passengers. One was pronounced dead at the hospital while the other showed no brain activity and isn’t expected to survive.

Saturday 9/17 PM-Sunday 9/18 AM:

A 16-year-old male was shot by and unknown suspect while in the 300 block of South Pilgrim Street. He was taken to San Joaquin General Hospital by ambulance for treatment to non-life threatening injuries. Suspect described as Hispanic male, 5’8″-6’0″ with a shaved head and a medium build.

A 30-year-old male was approached by several men wearing masks while he was walking to the store. The men demanded his property and the victim ran and was shot as he tried to flee. They took the victim’s property and fled on foot. Victimw as taken to hospital for treatment for non-life threatening injuries. Suspects described as black males ages 17-20.

Officers responding to a call found a 23-year-old male victim lying on the sidewalk. Victim had been shot and had succumb to his injuries. Witnesses reported hearing a loud party that ended in a disturbance that culminated in shots being fired. Officers found beer cans and other party remnants in front of the alleged house but no one came to the door.
